JLPT N1

~ながらも

But also; despite; though

Structure

Verb-ます stem + ながらも / Noun + ながらも / い-adj + ながらも / な-adj + ながらも

How it works

This expression connects two contrasting ideas, indicating that an action or state exists despite another, or that two seemingly contradictory things coexist. It shows a concession, similar to 'although' or 'while'.

Examples

彼は若者ながらも、しっかりとした考えを持っている。

Though he is young, he has solid ideas.

Common mistakes

Overusing it when a simpler 「~けれど」 or 「~が」 would suffice; ながらも adds a nuance of 'despite' or 'even though'.

Tip

Think of "while X is true, Y is also true (and a bit surprising)".
