JLPT N1

~なり

As soon as, directly after

Structure

Verb-dictionary form + なり

How it works

Used to indicate that one action immediately and often dramatically follows another, with the implication of no pause in between. The two actions are usually performed by the same subject.

Examples

彼は部屋に入るなり、ベッドに倒れ込んだ。

As soon as he entered the room, he collapsed onto the bed.

Common mistakes

Using it when the second action is not directly and immediately influenced by the first. It implies a cause-and-effect or direct sequence.

Tip

Similar to ~が早いか, but often with a stronger sense of the second action being a direct, unhesitating response to the first.
