JLPT N2
~に至るまで
Even to the extent of; even up to
Structure
Noun + に至るまで
How it works
~に至るまで is used to indicate that something covers a very wide range or includes even an extreme or unexpected example. It emphasizes comprehensiveness or thoroughness.
Examples
その本は、子供から大人に至るまで、幅広い層に読まれている。
That book is read by a wide range of people, from children even up to adults.
Common mistakes
Confusing it with simple '~まで' (up to). ~に至るまで adds emphasis on the breadth or the inclusion of an extreme or perhaps surprising point.
Tip
Think of 'it runs to the extent of (itaru made)'. The 'itaru' part means 'to reach' or 'to arrive at', suggesting reaching even a far extent.
