JLPT N2

~より仕方がない

Cannot help but; nothing else to do but

Structure

Verb Plain form + より仕方がない

How it works

This phrase is used to convey that there is no other option available except to do a particular action, often implying a sense of resignation or compulsion.

Examples

もう決まったことだから、やるより仕方がない。

It's already decided, so I have no choice but to do it.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with simple 'must do'; this emphasizes the absence of alternatives.

Tip

Remember 仕方 (しかた) means 'way/method'. So, 'より仕方がない' means 'there's no other way/method than this'.
