JLPT N2

~を~にまかせる

Leave X to Y, entrust X to Y

Structure

Verb-辞書形 + のを + 人 + にまかせる / 名詞 + を + 人 + にまかせる

How it works

This grammar pattern means to entrust something (を) to someone or something (に) else. It is used when you hand over a task, decision, or responsibility to another person or a situation.

Examples

この仕事はベテランの彼にまかせよう。

Let's leave this job to him, since he's a veteran.

Common mistakes

Mixing up the particles を and に; を marks the direct object (what is entrusted), and に marks the recipient (to whom it is entrusted).

Tip

Visualize 'passing the ball' or 'handing over the reins' to remember that you are ceding control to someone else.
