JLPT N1

~割りに(は)

Considering; for; comparatively

Structure

Verb-dictionary + 割りに(は) / Noun + の + 割りに(は) / い-adj + 割りに(は) / な-adj + な + 割りに(は)

How it works

This expression indicates that something is different from what one would expect given a certain condition or standard. It highlights a contrast or a surprising lack of correlation.

Examples

彼は若い割にはよく知っている。

He knows a lot for someone so young.

Common mistakes

Mixing it with をめぐって; the latter is about 'concerning' or 'around' a topic, while 割りに is about 'considering' a condition.

Tip

Imagine the scale balancing: "for its size, it's expensive" (期待と現実のギャップ).
